What Kind of Church?

Our simple purpose is to foster maturity in those that believe and to guide others to the person of Jesus.

Our church is structured around three values:

Transforming Gospel

We all tend to live in a way where we play the lead roles in the story of our lives.  But what if I found out that the story I’m in really isn’t about me?  That would lead me to radically reorient my life around another reality.  We here at Oaks Fellowship believe that the story scripture shares, and the one we’re all a part of, is of God on mission to redeem all of His creation because of His immense love; and that through the life, crucified death, and resurrection of His son Jesus, God will soon bring His plan to completion.  This is the life of believers: radically reorienting our life to the real story and learning how to live with our new identities.

This is our church: we are a fellowship of believers in this process of radically reorienting our lives around God’s story of redeeming creation.

Simplicity

We believe keeping it simple helps the church stay focused on its calling in a sustainable way.  We have seen how trying to be something other than what God has called us to be can lead to spiritual exhaustion, divisions, and other dysfunctions within the church.  Being a church that is less focused on gathering a large crowd, buildings, programs, and other peripherals will allow us to live out our calling without any unnecessary burdens.

In keeping things simple we hope to create an environment that is more like a family than a professional organization.  We want people to feel like they’re gathering with loved ones to worship together rather than going to an event or performance.  We also believe that it is this type of environment that better cultivates genuine relationships where we can be vulnerable and truthful and in turn be transformed more into the likeness of Jesus.

In no way do believe we’re doing church perfectly, we are learning through trial and error as we humbly lean on the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Committed Community

We believe that growing in faith is really done within the context of genuine community.  It is only within community where we will be challenged to grow.  And it is within genuine community where we are able to live out Jesus’ command in John 13:34-35 “…that you love one another just as I have loved you…By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Fulfilling this command will require us to be more than attendees or casual acquaintances. It will entail fostering relationships with people where you can be vulnerable and truthful; it will actually require sacrifice and humility in order for us to genuinely love one another.  Of course these types of relationships don’t just happen but it takes intention and commitment.  Anything worthwhile will always cost us something.

 Our Sunday Gatherings

@ 10 am

We know at times the modern worship gathering experience can make us feel like mere spectators.

So we gather and structure our church in such a way that it makes space for genuine participation and ownership of the community.

Here are a few things we currently do to help create this environment.

  • We gather in a circle rather than sitting in audience/performer arrangement

  • We use Bible centered group discussions rather than having a pastor speak the entire time (although there might be an occasional sermon when needed)

  • We make room for people to exercise their spiritual gifts

  • We share a meal after the gathering
